Pelicans are large water birds that makes up the family Pelecanidae. They are characterised by a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey and draining water from the scooped up contents before swallowing. In the game and deepest, darkest jungle of "JUMANJI", Pelicans are highly aggressive if anything tries to steal their catch from them, defending it by snapping with their long bills, but they can be bribed with another and discard the previous in favour of a fresher catch.
Characteristics
Pelicans frequent inland and coastal waters where they feed principally on fish, catching them at or near the water surface. They are gregarious birds, travelling in flocks, hunting cooperatively and breeding colonially. Four white-plumaged species tend to nest on the ground, and four brown or grey-plumaged species nest mainly in trees. The relationship between Pelicans and people has often been contentious.
Appearances
In the 1995 film, one of Judy Shepherd's dice rolls summons a stampede of local animals into Brantford, straight from "JUMANJI", including Rhinos, Elephants, Zebras and Pelicans.
The stampede wrecks the Parrish mansion and eventually they reach town, but one Pelican stays behind to inspect the players. Alan Parrish tried to scare the bird away, but it believed the game board to be a fish and flew off with it to find water. Sarah Whittle and the kids ran after Alan as he found the Pelican resting on a rock in the middle of a flowing river, where it's aggressively defending the game by snapping with its bill. Alan then caught a hanging fish from the water and tossed it for the Pelican to catch, kicking the board game into the river. Nearly losing it, Peter Shepherd retrieved it before going over the waterfall.
Once Alan's token finally reaches the game's crystal ball and he calls out the name, "JUMANJI", all the Pelicans and other animals were pulled back into the game, and everything from the altered timeline was undone.
Board Game
- Secret symbol: Die
- Number: 1
In the Milton Bradley board game, the Pelican appears as a danger card with it's own clue instead of being merged with the stampede. Rolling the rescue die within 1 second will defeat the Pelican threat.
Jigsaw Puzzles
In 1995, Milton Bradley produced three variant Jigsaw Puzzles as promotional tie-ins for the 1995 film.
- Animals
In the map closing credits of "Welcome to the Jungle", an illustration of a Pelican is next to the executive producers Ted Field and Mike Weber's credits.
Continuity
- The Pelican is the only animal from the 1995 film not to appear in the animated series.
