VERY IMPORTANT: ONCE A GAME OF JUMANJI IS STARTED, IT WILL NOT BE OVER UNTIL ONE PLAYER REACHES THE GOLDEN CITY.
—Instructions

Jumanji's Golden City is a settlement of golden buildings and towers, which is actually Jumanji itself (at least in the original Jumanji story book). The Golden City of Jumanji serves as the final goal space in the original story book and has several references in subsequent media.

Role[]

Jumanji Book Game

Playing the game.

Whoever begins playing the Jumanji board game must start in the deepest jungle and move their token by rolling the dice to move along the pathways to reach the final space. The final space is Jumanji itself, a city of golden buildings and towers. Once a round of gameplay is started, it will not be over until a player lands on the Golden City and calls out its name.

Appearances[]

In the original story, the Golden City is reached by Judy Shepherd, who finally reaches the space and calls out the city's name to undo the consequences brought out by the game, just in time to stop the volcanic activity.

While the Golden City of Jumanji is absent from subsequent Jumanji media, the 1995 film references it by the Jumanji board game having a golden zig-zag pattern on its front painting and also surrounding its crystal ball goal space, serving the same role to end a game when a player lands on the space and calls out its name.

There are several establishments in the animated series' version of Jumanji, but the Palace of Lost Clues and the Great Desert Palace serves the golden city's equivalent in several ways.

Palace of Lost Clues[]

Having clues written on oval window boxes serve as a chance for players to rediscover any lost clues. Here is also a Lion statue that lights up the Palace with it's ruby eyes; this is symbolic of the Lion being the first animal to emerge from the game in the story book.

Great Desert Palace[]

The Master of Jumanji's attempts to convince players he is Jumanji is supported by several links:

  • When announcing his challenges, he speaks in riddle rhymes, like the riddled messages manifested within Jumanji game-board's crystal ball, and was well aware of how clues and gameplay worked.
  • In the dark forest, there are squared paths that lead to the temple, like the paths on the game board for the player's tokens to run along.

The Palace he dwells in, is decorated in murals of animals, pointed spears and even dice akin to the Jumanji board game's decorations itself. The Great Desert Palace also serves as the animated series equivalent to the picture books golden city of Jumanji, which serves as the goal space.

His robes have golden zig-zags patterns on it, reminiscent of the zig-zag pattern on the Jumanji board game and surrounding the crystal ball and the golden city from the picture book.

The Golden City's role as the final goal is taken up by the Jaguar Shrine.
