Jumanji: The Next Level is an upcoming film, due for release near Christmas 2019. It has been announced by several sources including Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black. This is likely a direct sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, given the surprisingly critical and financial success of at the box office. There had been reports that Sony was already developing a sequel, with the same cast and core creative team in place, but now it's a sure thing. Dwayne Johnson took to social media to announced that Jumanji 3 is being worked on.

The film will draw more from Welcome to the Jungle than the original film, though the three films will still share continuity.[1]

Plot

Despite the events of the previous film, the four Brantford High School friends appear to have grown distant from each other. In his solitude, Spencer Gilpin appeared to have rediscovered the Jumanji video game, seemingly broken down from the four destroying the game console it was originally plugged into. After attempting to fix the game, he seemed to have been pulled back into the realm of Jumanji. Following Spencer’s disappearance, his three friends, Anthony Johnson, Martha Kaply and Bethany Walker figure out that he played the Jumanji video game again, reluctantly playing too in order to bring him back. This time Eddie Gilpin Spencer's grandfather now took on the form of Dr. Smolder Bravestone instead of Spencer, his friend Milo Walker was now Franklin "Mouse" Finbar instead of Fridge, who had now become Shelly Oberon, leaving Martha as Ruby Roundhouse once more while Bethany has become a horse.

Development

Dwayne Johnson confirms the developmental process is well-underway on Jumanji 3. Sony took a bit of a risk a few years back by announcing a Jumanji sequel/reboot was coming. There was a growing fatigue and negativity surrounding any reboots, and with The Rock attached, it had one of Hollywood's most prolific stars. They also planted it just a few weeks after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a release date that would've sunk most movies. Instead, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle exceeded every expectation and was one of last year's most enjoyable blockbusters.

The feeling of satisfaction it left the audience with was proven time and time again as Welcome to the Jungle climbed the box office charts. It has now become Sony's biggest movie ever domestically and almost made $1 billion worldwide - even though it's already available on Blu-ray. That's why it came as no surprise when reports surfaced that a sequel was in the works; something that the film's star and producer has now confirmed to be true.
